2016-17 YAVs

2016-2017 Boston Food Justice YAVs

Katie McCormick

My name is Katie McCormick and I am so excited to begin my YAV year. I’m about to graduate from Florida Southern College with a degree in communications. I’m from Tampa, Florida where my family and I have lived my whole life. I am so excited to move to Boston and start to discern God’s call on my life. My three favorite things are St. Bernards, a good book, and food. Katie volunteers at Children’s Health Watch at Boston Medical Center and Fourth Presbyterian Church in South Boston.  (Read Katie’s blog here.)

Chris Nellett

My name is Chris Nellett, I am 23 years old. I enjoy Reality TV, bad puns, and making movie quotes from 80’s movies that no one gets! I graduated with a Religious Studies degree from the University of Arizona (Go Wildcats!) in May 2016. I will be doing my YAV year in Boston, which should be a lot cooler than Arizona! I’m excited/nervous for my first REAL snow! I’m not sure what I’ll be doing after YAV, but I hope whatever I may do it’ll make the world a better place. Chris volunteers at Women’s Lunch Place and Church of the Covenant in Boston’s Back Bay (Read Chris’s blog here.)

Mary Kate Robbins

Hi! My name is Mary Kate Robbins. I am a coffee-lover, runner, yogi, artist, and foodie, and am most content when surrounded by family and friends. I majored in Nutrition while attending the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS. I’m excited to begin my next adventure as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) in Boston, MA, working with the Boston Food Justice Alliance and Presbytery of Boston. I’ve always felt that life is more fun when you give rather than get. I have embraced this journey and am ready for the discoveries and opportunities for learning that await me and those whom I will be building relationships with during this year of service. Mary Kate serves at Brookline Food Pantry, Women and Girls Thriving, and First Presbyterian Church in Brookline (Read Mary Kate’s blog here.)

Ivy Beck

Hello! My name is Ivy and I am from Washington State. I grew up in Seattle with my mom, dad, and little sister Siani who’s 20. In May 2016 I graduated from Whitworth University with BAs in English and French.  I love writing poetry and creative nonfiction, hiking, rock climbing, singing, sleeping, and yummy food. I feel called to be a YAV working on food justice issues because food is a necessity and a right. There are so many people who have neither the finances to buy nor basic access to fresh, healthy food. And that has to change. I am honored to be a YAV, and I am pretty dang excited to put my passion for food, people, and Jesus to work. Boston, here I come! Ivy volunteers at Needham Community FarmNeedham Community Council Food Pantry and Needham Presbyterian Church.  (Read Ivy’s blog here.)
